The eSIM vs local SIM debate is the most common question we receive from nomads planning their first extended European trip. The honest answer is that both have genuine advantages, and the right choice depends on your specific situation.

Coverage Reality Check
Coverage maps from providers are optimistic. Our field experience suggests that actual coverage is typically 15–20% less than what maps indicate, particularly in rural areas and mountainous regions. For nomads planning to work from scenic rural locations, this gap matters.
The countries with the most reliable coverage for remote work are the Netherlands, Germany, and the Nordic countries. Spain and Italy are generally good in cities but can be challenging in rural areas. Eastern Europe has improved dramatically but still has more coverage gaps than Western Europe.
Speed Requirements for Remote Work
Different remote work tasks have different connectivity requirements. Email and messaging work fine on 3G. Web browsing and file sharing need at least 4G. Video calls require stable 4G with at least 5 Mbps upload. Large file uploads (video editing, design work) need the fastest available connection.
Most modern eSIM plans and local SIM cards provide adequate speeds for all but the most bandwidth-intensive tasks in urban areas. The challenge is consistency — a plan that delivers 50 Mbps in a city center may drop to 2 Mbps in a rural area or during peak hours.
Regional Connectivity Considerations
Western Europe (Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Netherlands, Belgium, Austria) offers the most consistent connectivity for remote workers. 4G is widely available, 5G is expanding in cities, and most eSIM providers have strong network partnerships in this region.
Central Europe (Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary, Slovakia) has improved significantly and now offers reliable urban connectivity. Rural areas are more variable, but major cities and tourist destinations are generally well-served.
